The behaviour might hold true in real life, but online people tend to be more nasty and less caring about their actions. Of course there are several people who behave responsibly, but the few who tend to spoil the fun for others tend to get the most attention. And that's what it comes down to in the end. Online, one can indulge in gross attention seeking behaviour without feeling the embarrassment of a real-life confrontation. I think that's a factor you've missed out.
